A theme has been running through some remarks made by certain residents in District 4, saying that I'm not representing their interests and spend a lot of time "kissing up" to the residents in the southern part of the county. Many of the people making these remarks are supporting the mayor in his attempt to defeat SPLOST, because they agree with him that a new jail and courthouse is more important to be on SPLOST than road improvements and public safety improvements.  In short, they think that their property taxes will be raised if a jail and / or courthouse bond passes, and don't think their property taxes will be raised if SPLOST is defeated.

That is an argument for later.

The real issue is that they think that I'm "not listening to their concerns" when I don't agree with them. But does disagreeing with them on SPLOST and jail funding mean I don't represent their interests well in District 4? Hardly.

We'll detail below just how well I have been representing District 4 and their interests in my tenure as county commissioner.

Updated Jan 31, 2008

A friend sent me a little reminder about some issues I forgot to put on this list.  As warned about below, I'll be updating this page as my memory (and others) allows.

I have been the leading advocate for keeping Bethel Park out of the hands of the YMCA, and in the hands of county residents. I'll continue to fight for the Constitutional rights of those people most affected by a potential YMCA camp, and protect the rights of ALL county residents to use their public park.

The Greenleaf C&D landfill on SR 306 wanted to expand operations and become a municipal solid waste transfer station, which would have brought more traffic and garbage to the surrounding area. After careful consideration (something I always do), that effort was denied.

Anyone remember the discussion about a jail being built by the Eagle Point landfill off of Old Federal Rd.?  Hear anything about that today?  Who do you think fought to find other alternatives for the county commission to consider? (That would be  - me) Now the jail will be located in Cumming on Veteran's Memorial. How am I doing so far?

Anyone drive up GA 400 in the past year or so? Notice a little improvement at GA 400 and Martin Rd.? I was one of two commissioners to press the DOT into moving ahead with the traffic light at that intersection, which will save countless lives and injuries from occurring there. Many people complained about that intersection for years. It took me two years to get it done, but it was done with my help.

How about managed growth in District 4? In the three years I have been commissioner, the county's Future Land Use Map has been followed more closely than in any other commission district. But while I have held developers to an expected standard, I have also been fair to them in not demanding conditions or stipulations that required them to donate land or add features that would drive their costs up. More important, I have been consistent in my votes and do not favor anyone or anything but our laws.

What about fire support? I championed the purchase of land in the Silver City area that will house Fire Station #7, due to be built in late 2008 or early 2009. This is the first new (non-replacement) station built in Forsyth County in 10 years, and will better protect District 4 residents in the north-west corner of our county. In addition, my push to add fire personnel and increase water flows across the county should allow homeowners to see a decrease in their homeowners insurance rates through a reduced ISO rating, hopefully in 2009.

How about intersection improvements along Keiths Bridge Rd. (SR 306)? Do you think that Parks and Shadburn would have been ready for a traffic light if I didn't push for those to move forward?  How long have we been waiting for that intersection to be improved?

Browns Bridge Rd. (SR 369) is no exception. Six intersection improvements (four on the east side of GA 400 and two on the west side) are due to have their state contract let in February of 2008. Yes, it is at least a year later than we all hoped, but state roads take more time than county roads.  The monies are already appropriated. The state just needs to award the contract. Look for Waldrip, Jot-Em Down / Bethel, Shady Grove, Holztclaw, Hendrix and Dr. Bramblett safety improvements to be completed in the next 8-9 months.

Not bad for a commissioner who was in the minority for two of those three years.

So if you want to tell me that I am not representing you, first, do one thing. Actually tell me, and not whisper it to your neighbor. Next, tell the truth about me and my accomplishments when you do talk to people, because I do not tolerate liars.  Finally, be specific.  Anyone can complain in generalities. It takes a true citizen to step forward and let their elected official know what is on their mind.

More will be added as items come to mind or are accomplished in the future.
